The staff in the Cable Office on the Cocos Islands had - ironically - limited opportunity to send personal messages. Most operators had contacts in far away places with which it was incredibly difficult to communicate. There was no Post Office on Cocos until 1933.
Hence the operators on Cocos would send telegraphic messages to the Perth Telegraph Office and the fellow operators there would transcribe the message on to a postcard and post it.
